Painting quotes for the same house can be far apart. The difference is almost always in the prep, the number of coats and what's included, not the paint itself.
What's usually in a painting quote
- Prep: moving and covering furniture, filling, sanding, caulking and priming
- Surfaces: walls, ceilings, trim, doors, closets, each listed or not
- Coats: usually two
- Paint: brand and product line
- Repairs: drywall or rotten wood, often quoted separately
- Clean-up and leftover touch-up paint
What changes the price
Interior
- Ceilings and trim take longer than walls. A walls-only quote will be much cheaper.
- Big colour changes, especially dark to light, can need a primer and a third coat.
- High ceilings and stairwells need extra equipment.
- Patching damage, removing wallpaper and lead-safe prep in older homes all add time.
Exterior
- How much scraping and sanding the old paint needs
- Rotten boards, sills and trim to replace
- Height: two-storey walls, gables and steep lots
- Siding type: wood, aluminum, vinyl, brick or stucco
Cabinets
Priced by the number of doors and drawers, plus grain filling and new hardware.
How to compare quotes
- Are ceilings, trim, doors and closets included in each?
- What prep is included, in detail?
- How many coats, and which paint?
- Are repairs included or extra?
- Is the painter insured, and is there a written warranty?
