What's involved

  • Cleaning. Washing off dirt, mildew and grey weathered fibres with a wood cleaner and a careful pressure wash.
  • Stripping. Removing old peeling stain, especially solid stain that's flaking.
  • Brightening and sanding. Restoring the wood colour and smoothing raised grain and splinters.
  • Staining. Applying the stain by brush, roller or sprayer and back-brushing it into the wood.

Which stain?

Transparent and semi-transparent stains soak in and show the grain. They fade rather than peel, so recoating is easier. Solid stains look more like paint and hide older, patched wood, but they can peel on deck boards where feet wear them. Many painters recommend semi-transparent on deck floors and solid on railings and fences.

New wood

New pressure-treated lumber is wet when it's installed. It usually needs a few months to dry out before staining, or the stain won't soak in. A simple test: sprinkle water on it. If it beads, it's not ready.

Questions

How often should a deck be stained?

Usually every two to three years for floors, which take the most wear, and less often for railings and fences. South-facing decks in full sun need it more often.

Can you stain over the old stain?

If it's the same type and still sound, yes, after cleaning. If it's peeling, it should be stripped first, or the new stain will peel with it.

Can I change from solid to semi-transparent?

Only by stripping the solid stain completely, which is a lot of work. Going from semi-transparent to solid is easier.

When is the best time to stain?

Dry, mild days in late spring, summer or early fall, out of the hottest midday sun, with no rain for a day or two.
