Kitchen cabinet painting

Solid cabinets with an orange oak finish, a 1990s kitchen that works fine but looks tired, or a bathroom vanity that doesn't match anything. We connect you with a local painter who refinishes cabinets across Woodstock and Oxford County.

  • Serving Woodstock, Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and all of Oxford County.
  • No fee to us. You only pay for the work itself.

How cabinet painting is done

  • Doors and drawer fronts come off and are usually taken to the painter's shop to be sprayed.
  • Everything is degreased. Kitchen cabinets have years of cooking grease that stops paint sticking.
  • Sanding and a bonding primer so the paint grips old finishes, melamine and laminate.
  • Grain filling, if you want oak to look smooth rather than showing its grain through the paint.
  • Sprayed topcoats of a hard cabinet enamel, for a smooth, durable finish without brush marks.
  • Reinstalled, often with new hinges and handles.

Paint, reface or replace?

If the cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works, painting gives you the biggest change for the least money. Refacing puts new doors and veneer on the old boxes. Replacing is the answer when the boxes are damaged or you're changing the layout. Read our guide on painting, refacing or replacing.

Living without a kitchen

Expect about a week. The kitchen stays usable while the doors are away, but the cabinet boxes are painted on site, so plan for a few days of covered counters and fumes from primer.

Questions

Will painted cabinets chip?

Any paint can chip with hard knocks, but a properly prepped, primed and sprayed cabinet enamel holds up well. Rolled or brushed latex wall paint is what usually chips and peels.

Can melamine or laminate cabinets be painted?

Often, yes, with thorough cleaning and a bonding primer. Peeling or swollen laminate can't be fixed with paint.

Will the oak grain show through?

Yes, unless it's filled. Some people like the texture. If you want a smooth modern look, ask for grain filling, which adds cost.

How long does cabinet painting take?

Usually about a week from removing the doors to rehanging them, sometimes more for large kitchens.
