What can be painted

  • Wood siding and trim, the most common exterior job on older Oxford County homes
  • Aluminum and vinyl siding, with the right primer and a vinyl-safe colour that won't warp in the sun
  • Brick and stucco, with breathable masonry paint so moisture can get out
  • Soffits, fascia and eaves
  • Front doors, garage doors and shutters
  • Porches, railings and columns

Prep is the whole job

A good exterior paint job is mostly done before the first coat goes on: washing, scraping loose paint, sanding the edges smooth, replacing rotten boards, caulking gaps and priming bare wood. Paint over loose paint peels again within a year or two. Ask each painter exactly what their prep includes.

The weather window

Exterior paint needs dry surfaces and temperatures above the label minimum, usually around 10°C, for the paint to cure. In Oxford County that means roughly May to early October, with no rain forecast and no dew on the walls. Read our guide to when to paint outside.

Painting brick

Painting brick changes the look of a house completely, but it's hard to undo. It needs a breathable masonry coating, not regular house paint, so moisture inside the wall can escape. Older soft brick, common on century homes, needs extra care, and some painters recommend a limewash or mineral paint instead.

Questions

How long does exterior paint last?

A good job on well-prepped wood usually lasts many years, longer on the shaded sides of the house and less on the south and west sides that get full sun.

Can vinyl siding be painted?

Yes, with a vinyl-safe paint and colour. Very dark colours can absorb enough heat to warp vinyl, so painters use paints made for it.

When should I book an exterior painter?

Winter or early spring. Good painters fill their summers early, and the outdoor season in Oxford County is short.

Do I need to be home?

Not usually. Painters need access to the outside, water and sometimes power. Tell them about pets and anything near the walls you want moved.
